As we enter March, all thoughts of Christmas and New Year have truly passed. Spring is apparently on its way and we can start to look ahead, rather than bemoan the cold and misery of the winter months that start each year off. And for a lot of people, there is a stirring excitement at the thought of the next big event in the calendar, St. Patrick’s Day!
For a lot of people, St. Patrick’s Day is synonymous with Guinness, beer, and just getting plain drunk. Over the years I’ve seen various colleagues of mine, Irish or otherwise, stumble into work looking a little worse for wear come the 18th March. In fact, a couple of years back I had to conduct an interview alongside one such colleague on the morning of the 18th; it proved to be one of the more interesting interviews I’ve sat in.
Anyway, this got all of us here at Realm thinking about ways in which we can benefit professionally from St. Patrick’s Day, and perhaps alleviate the inevitable Friday morning of ineffective working that will follow. We decided to have a browse for professional networking events on St. Patrick’s Day, so that we could suggest useful opportunities for people to make new contacts and benefit their career, whilst nonetheless enjoying the festivities.
Whilst doing our research we came across a variety of events, some that would seemingly advocate drinking more than others, and then some that are actually in no way St. Patrick’s Day related, but look to be worth a go regardless.
First of all, going all out, Nottingham Professional Services have arranged a St. Patrick’s Day themed trip to Cheltenham Racecourse. JCI Manchester appear equally as caught up in the Irish spirit, having planned an ‘Emerald City’ themed new members evening at Suburbia Cocktail Co.
JCI Leeds have got an event running that week as well, albeit a couple of days before St. Patrick’s Day. They’re doing a pub quiz at The Hop. Also over in Yorkshire, Junior Lawyers Leeds are hosting a ‘Wine, Beer, and Careers’ event at Wino.
Then there’s the in no way St. Patrick’s Day related or alcohol-related sponsored sleep-out taking place at Villa Park in Birmingham on the 17th. Business and civil leaders will be sleeping outdoors for the evening to highlight the homelessness problem within the city.
