At this time of year, it can be overwhelming to balance work and social demands in the lead-up to Christmas, while at the same time, preparing for the big day itself. In the back of your mind, you might be considering trying something new in the New Year, but looking for a new legal role is probably not at the top of your current list of priorities. However, a determined job seeker can certainly still find a new job in December – in fact, there are some very good reasons why now’s the ideal time to explore opportunities.
1. There’s less competition
Approximately one-fifth of us have a new year’s resolution around changing jobs and consequently, in January, the job market is tougher and more competitive than ever. Right now, however, fewer people tend to be interested in looking for a new opportunity (for the reasons above).
So whether it is a case of applying and interviewing for a position before the Christmas break, or just putting feelers out to make sure that you’re at the top of the pile in January, getting the ball rolling now could reduce competition and boost the chances of your application standing out.
2. You’ll show that you're committed to your job search
Like those January gym goers that disappear come February, many of the people who set out to find a job in the New Year, attend an interview and, in some cases, accept a role, only to not follow through because they’ve entered the jobs market for the wrong reasons.
Whilst employers don’t view every January applicant with suspicion, they recognise that those in the market leading up to Christmas are genuinely committed to moving and, as a result, are likely to take their applications more seriously.
3. Recruiters will have more time to work with you
Because there are fewer active job seekers, for recruiters, the last few weeks of December can be one of the quietest times of the year. This means we’ve got more time on our hands to tailor your CV, go out of our way to apply careful pressure on hiring managers, and generally make the whole process as straightforward as possible for you.
4. You’ll keep up your job search momentum
If you suspend your hunt over the Christmas period, you might struggle to motivate yourself again to start looking in the New Year. By keeping up the search, you’ll remain focused and enthusiastic. Most importantly, your positive attitude and drive won’t go unnoticed by recruiters.
5. Everyone’s feeling festive!
People are generally more positive around this time of year, so it’s an excellent time to approach recruiters. Interestingly, because employers are in better spirits, a higher percentage of people who interview in December get offered jobs than those who do so in the first quarter of a year, following the festive break.
