It’s no secret that flexibility has become one of the most sought-after benefits in the legal profession—and the data confirms it’s now a key part of how lawyers evaluate their careers.
We looked at homeworking trends across nearly 1,000 lawyers working in private client, family, personal injury, and litigation roles across the North West, West Midlands and Yorkshire. Here’s what the 2025 salary survey reveals.
🗓 Hybrid Is the Norm—But Not Everywhere
Most lawyers now work from home at least one day per week, with many averaging two to three days. But flexibility still varies considerably by practice area and seniority.
Litigation lawyers are enjoying some of the most generous arrangements, with 3+ days of home working common across PQE levels.
In family law, flexibility tends to increase with experience. Junior lawyers often report just 1 day WFH, while senior lawyers may be working remotely up to 4 days per week.
Private client lawyers are seeing increasing flexibility—especially those with supervisory or managerial responsibilities—but many still average just 1–2 days at home.
Personal injury professionals, particularly in claimant roles, report strong hybrid arrangements, with some working fully remotely.
🧭 Flexibility Is About More Than Location
Flexibility isn’t just about where you work—it’s also about when and how. A number of lawyers told us they value firms that offer:
- Flexible start and finish times
- Condensed hours or 9-day fortnights
- Support with childcare or caring responsibilities
Yet, despite demand, access to these types of arrangements remains patchy.
