In our latest edition of Realm Talks To..., we caught up with Shelley Wales, a Senior Family Solicitor at Thornton Jones.
Shelley gave us an insight into the proudest moments of her career, advice for anyone starting in law and explained who inspires her professionally.
How do you usually start your working day?
After the usual shower and nudging of the kids to arise from their lair, I like nothing more than to chill for a moment with a cup of tea and a listen to Radio 2 Breakfast (before the kids raise the roof that is).
At what age did you decide that the law was for you?
I studied GCSE Law and from that point onwards I was always fascinated by the law. I had a very inspirational teacher at high school who I believe fuelled my interest and curiosity. From then on, I think I knew that my future would be as a professional in law.
What’s been the proudest moment of your career so far?
Aside from the usual life achievements, the one major achievement that stands out as being my proudest moment is qualifying as a solicitor. Knowing from such a young age that it was the profession for me, finally completing my studies and qualifying as a solicitor was a very proud moment.
Who’s the biggest inspiration in your career?
I’ve already mentioned my inspirational teacher who helped me realise that a profession in law was my destiny, but my inspiration didn’t stop there. I have been fortunate to work with some amazing people over the years, from my training right up until now - I just can’t pick just one!
What’s the most interesting case you’ve worked on?
I’ve worked on many interesting cases over the years however I’m actually working on a very interesting and unique divorce case as I write this! This particular case involves an elderly couple. One party has made an application for financial order despite the divorce being completed many years ago. There are issues around capacity and non-matrimonial assets to be discussed. It will be interesting to see how the court will deal with this unique case.
What advice would you give to someone just starting out in the law?
If you are passionate like me about a profession in law, then you must work hard and never give up. There will be challenges and lots of study but if you’re committed, and prepared to put the effort in then you will succeed.
What’s your go-to work from home snack?
What are you most looking forward to doing now that lockdown is lifting?
There are lots of things to look forward to. Meals and drinks with friends and family is high on the list but I think mostly, we are in need of a holiday in the sun!
Do you prefer a night in or a night out?
Well, that depends on the company!
What TV show are you currently bingeing?
Grey’s Anatomy is currently my go-to and I’m binging on as much as I can in readiness for Season 18 which is expected later this year.
