Realm Talks To... Lauren Hughes

In this edition of Realm Talks To... Realm spoke to Lauren Hughes, Residential Conveyancing Solicitor at Alfred Newton Solicitors. During their conversation, Lauren gives us an insight into her daily routine, her post-lockdown plans and her advice for aspiring lawyers.

How do you usually start your working day?

I must admit I start my day with the snooze button followed by a cup of tea to set me up for the day. Once I am in the office I like to identify what work needs to be done, starting with my emails and then making a list of matters that I need to work on.

At what age did you decide that law was for you?

I was about 16 or 17 years of age. I was fortunate that my college had law on their curriculum and I quickly worked out that my future lay in this field.

What's been the proudest moment of your career so far?

So far, I would say my proudest moment was qualifying as a solicitor, it was the point where I realised all of the study and hard work had paid off. It was the moment that gave me more opportunities to progress in my career and gain more experience.

Who's the biggest inspiration in your career?

My parents are the biggest inspiration, they believed in me and my career and supported me through university thus giving me the confidence to pursue a career in the field and help make my future aspirations a reality.

What's the most interesting case you have worked on?

During my early legal career as a paralegal and trainee solicitor, I predominantly worked in family law, there were so many interesting cases across both the private and public law sector, and therefore it would be difficult just to pick one case.

I have also come across a number of complex and interesting cases in the conveyance sector, whether it be an obscure right of way or complex leasehold flats with abnormal ground rent.

What advice would you give someone just starting out in law?

I would advise getting as much experience in a law firm alongside your studies. I chose the education route and as soon as I completed my LPC, whilst I had the theory knowledge, I lacked some practical experience. I was fortunate to get a secretarial role in my first firm which gave me the opportunity to rise through the ranks whilst being supported through my training contract.

It was a valuable experience to see how each sector in a law firm works, from support staff, paralegal to eventually qualifying as a solicitor.

What’s your go-to work-from-home snack?

When I returned to work following furlough, I immediately returned to the office and as such, I didn’t work from home, but if I did, it probably would be a chocolate biscuit to complement a strong coffee to get me through the working day.

What are you most looking forward to doing now that lockdown is lifting?

I am looking forward to spending more time with my family and visiting many of the fantastic eateries and bars within my local area. I have certainly missed the atmosphere in a lively restaurant, especially after a hectic week at work.  Now that aviation travel is back on the cards I am also looking forward to booking some holidays abroad, whether it be a short city break or beach holiday to the States or Greek Islands.

Do you prefer a night in or a night out?

I am not one for late nights and nightclubs but do enjoy frequenting a live music bar with tapas and a glass of wine.

Which TV show are you currently binging?

I am currently working my way through Silent Witness, a bit old school I know but it's an easy watch and quite entertaining.
