In this edition of Realm Talks To... Associate Consultant Lucy spoke to Ann Robinson, Head of Family at Blacks. During their conversation, Ann gave us an insight into the obstacles she faced when starting her career, her holidays in Canada and why New Year’s resolutions aren’t for her.
Why did you decide to become a lawyer?
I would like to say that I had a burning desire to fight injustice, but the truth is that I wanted a career that would give me financial security.
What’s the biggest obstacle you had to overcome in your career so far?
My career goes back to 1988 when I started as an Articled Clerk (Trainee Solicitor) with Barrington Black, Austin & Co, the forerunner of Blacks, and whilst there have been plenty of obstacles along the way, not one of them seems that big with the passage of time. I count myself lucky to have come into the Law at a time when anything was and still is possible if you show a bit of grit and determination.
What makes your firm different?
Our vision at Blacks is to be an inspirational organisation and the trusted advisor of choice for commercial and high net worth clients, renowned for exceptional service and client care. We strive to make this vision permeate all aspects of how we operate.
Have you made any New Year’s Resolutions for 2022?
Personally, no. Resolving to do things differently/better is an ongoing process throughout the year.
What advice would you give to your teenage self?
Chat with your grandparents and find out about their lives and history. Mine died in their eighties when I was in my late teens and I wish I had known them better and found out more about what they did in their younger lives.
Which app can’t you live without?
I don’t actually have many apps on my phone but the dictation app is brilliant! Being old enough to remember the days when we dictated via a cassette recorder, plugged into the wall, the dictation app has made it so much easier to keep in contact with my secretary, Lisa, particularly when we are working remotely.
Where’s your favourite holiday destination?
British Columbia in Canada where my husband and I have some Canadian friends whom we visit every few years. Not only is the scenery spectacular, we always have wonderful and memorable adventures when we visit our friends and spend time with them.
