This month, we caught up with Michael Jefferies, director of Jefferies Solicitors and Lawyers Medical Agency.
So then Michael, what’s your favourite cuisine/meal?
I like all food other than liver and rhubarb.
Why was it that you went into law?
I always wanted to run my own business. Law is both intellectually challenging and a sector where you can set your own business up for a relatively low cost. You don’t need to buy costly machinery, rent expensive high street premises or employ many staff as a start-up.
Jefferies does a lot of work with the charity Children’s Adventure Farm Trust. Could you tell us about that?
We have worked with the Children’s Adventure Farm Trust for a number of years now. As it is a local charity, we can directly see the benefit our efforts have, whether we get involved in fundraising or volunteer there. Personally, I have done everything from raking up autumn leaves and creosoting a wooden pirate ship, to dressing up as Father Christmas! It’s humbling to interact with these disadvantaged children, and it makes you realise how lucky our families are.
What do you make of the Northern Powerhouse concept?
I hope that the Northern Powerhouse justifies all the hype, but time will tell.
A lot has been made of LASPO, but what do you think the future of personal injury really looks like?
LASPO had a detrimental effect on the personal injury business. We were all surprised that the government did not give the LASPO changes time to “bed in” before the Prime Minister and Chancellor proposed further developments. Now that we have voted to Brexit who knows whether those additional proposals will go ahead or not.
If you could turn the clock back and be anything other than a lawyer, what would it be?
When I was growing up I wanted to either be a Formula 1 racing driver or drive an ice cream van. If I could turn the clock back, I’d have raced cars until my mid-30s and then bought an ice cream van!
