Realm Hotspot Talks To... Sarah Goulbourne

Posted on 1/6/2016 by Katherine Memery

This month, we spoke to Sarah Goulbourne, experienced Corporate Commercial Lawyer and Co-founder of gunnercooke, an innovative challenger law firm in Manchester and London.

Let’s start with an ice-breaker, where’s your favourite place to eat/drink in Manchester?

I love San Carlo, I enjoy the buzz.

What drew you to the legal profession?

My father was a solicitor so I suppose I grew up understanding what law was about. I enjoyed studying law at uni and so it made sense to move into a career in law

And why then did you decide to establish gunnercooke?

As a head of legal I had bought legal services for over 20 years. I knew as a client what was important to me: senior lawyers as trusted advisors giving certainty of price where possible. These are the 2 things that gunnercooke is built around. It means client service really does come first.

gunnercooke has been nominated for various awards, you’ve expanded into London, and you’ve reached the 100 Partner milestone, but what has been the highlight of it all for you?

The highlight for me is hearing from gunnercooke lawyers that they’re loving the move they have made away from traditional practice and how they wish they had done it years ago!

What do you think it is about Manchester that has made it such an attractive place for business in recent years?

The entrepreneurial spirit of the city: it deserves the title Northern Powerhouse: new office developments, restaurants, bars, and 2 hours from London by train. It’s a great place to build and develop our gcTrust team who provide services to our lawyers.

And a gentle one to finish, what’s your favourite thing about Manchester?

It’s a vibrant city in the sunshine and the rain!
