Cost Draftsperson

Apply now
  • Work from home with just 2 office days per month with genuine flexibility
  • No rigid billing targets, focus on quality work, not ticking boxes
  • Established, close-knit costs team with long tenure and real stability

This Manchester-based costs role offers something rare in the market, proper flexibility combined with a steady stream of high-quality work. You’ll be part of a small, experienced team handling a growing volume of external private costs matters, with the autonomy to manage your own caseload from early on.

In your first few months, you’ll settle into the team and take ownership of your own files, primarily focused on paying party work, disputes and negotiations. There’s also exposure to legal aid work where needed, giving you variety without overwhelming your day-to-day focus.

By the 12-month mark, you’ll be running a full and varied caseload with minimal supervision, working directly with clients and supporting both internal teams and external instructions. Longer term, as the team continues to grow, there’s scope to step into a more senior position, whether that’s mentoring others or helping shape how the department evolves.

The culture is informal, supportive and built on trust. People manage their own time, work around life commitments and aren’t micromanaged. It’s a team where people tend to stay, not because they have to, but because the environment works.

Who we’re looking for

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in costs drafting
  • Experience handling paying party work and disputes
  • Confident drafting Bills, Schedules, Points of Dispute and Replies
  • Experience with Precedent S electronic bills
  • Ability to manage a caseload independently, often remotely
  • Comfortable dealing directly with clients and advising on costs matters
  • Strong attention to detail and organisation

What you’ll be doing

  • Managing your own caseload of external private costs matters
  • Drafting Bills of Costs, Schedules and Precedent S documents
  • Preparing Points of Dispute and Points of Reply
  • Handling costs negotiations and disputes
  • Supporting legal aid costs work where required
  • Liaising directly with clients and internal teams
  • Using case management and drafting systems to manage files efficiently
