In our latest edition of Realm Talks To…, we caught up with Daniel Wilson, Associate Solicitor at KLS Law.
In this interview, Daniel explains who he counts as his biggest career inspirations, tells us a bit about his most interesting cases and gives his advice to anyone starting in law.
How do you usually start your working day?
With a bowl of porridge and a nice brew…in bed!
At what age did you decide that the law was for you?
I still haven’t decided yet! Joking aside, once I committed to studying a law degree at the age of 17, I was determined to follow through and qualify as a Solicitor.
What’s been the proudest moment of your career so far?
Being promoted to Associate Partner at my last firm. Reward for all my hard work in a challenging and often stressful industry.
Who’s the biggest inspiration in your career?
Fictionally – Tom Cruise’s character Daniel Kaffee in the 1992 legal drama A Few Good Men – “You can’t handle the truth!”
In real life – my Uncle Mike, who is a very successful commercial litigator.
What’s the most interesting case you’ve worked on?
A high-value multi-track road traffic case involving a written off sports car and multiple claims emanating from vehicles who seemingly “collided”. I acted for the alleged fault driver’s Insurer. Something always seemed wrong with the circumstances and through painstaking research, I was able to adduce evidence that the vehicle occupants were known to each other and this was a fundamentally dishonest claim.
What advice would you give to someone just starting in the law?
Maintain a good work-life balance, don’t let negative and difficult colleagues get you down and have faith in your own abilities.
What’s your go-to work from home snack?
Chocolate Chip Belvita Biscuits.
What are you most looking forward to doing now that lockdown is lifting?
Holidays be they in Britain or Abroad…I love visiting new places.
Do you prefer a night in or a night out?
Depends who’s cooking! In all seriousness, I have enjoyed “date nights” at home but can’t wait to sample some of the exciting new eateries popping up in and around Greater Manchester.
What TV show are you currently bingeing?
Below Deck – A reality TV series following the lives of an often-dysfunctional crew working onboard luxury charter yachts, and catering to the whims of the rich and famous in glamorous tropical locations. Never a dull moment and the Captain has some brilliant one-liners, such as “We’ve gone through more deckhands than a condom salesman in a whorehouse.” Classic Lee!
