In the latest private client instalment of Realm Talks To, our Private Client specialist Kelly spoke to Nina Sperring, Principal Associate at Weightmans. In the interview, Nina discussed when she decided to pursue a career in Law, how she stays positive after a bad day and what makes Weightmans different from other firms.
At what age did you decide law was for you?
I have always been interested in law and had a passion for justice. I studied Criminology and Sociology at Liverpool University and undertook lots of work experience and voluntary work during this time, which helped me to decide that I wanted to be a Solicitor. Being someone who loves to build up rapport and trusting relationships with people – often during difficult times – I knew I needed a role with lots of client interaction. I was lucky enough to go on to train at a firm that specialised in Wills, Trusts and Estates, and so I immediately knew this was the right area of law for me.
What makes your firm different?
When I joined Weightmans in February 2022, I was amazed at how much it felt like a family firm with a real community spirit. It’s a leading top 45 UK law firm which is impressive, but we’re also humble about it. We offer a full range of services, from insurance to company law, banking and finance advice and private client services. This means that commercial clients also have the benefit of other services, such as estate planning.
What’s the best piece of advice you have ever received?
My primary school motto was “they can because they think they can”. That has always resonated with me – I strongly believe that negative self-talk can be limiting, but conversely, if you believe in yourself then anything is possible. I do also think it’s important to remember to be kind too! There is no reason why you can’t be highly successful and driven but also encourage and empower those around us.
What’s the best thing about your job?
I enjoy meeting and looking after people. If I am instructed to administer an estate or make a Will, for example, I know that some individuals may find these processes difficult. It’s incredibly rewarding when you know that you have gained the individual’s trust and that they are pleased with the work you have done, especially if they go on to recommend you to their friends and family.
When you are having a bad day, what do you do to make yourself feel better?
I have lots of outside hobbies and interests, which are great stress relievers. I enjoy hill running, warrior training (a kind of boot camp) and spending time with my young family and all of our pets (guinea pigs, dogs, fish and a 75-year-old tortoise…). I would also like to take up yoga if I can find time to fit it in!
Where’s your favourite place to eat out?
I love all food and trying new things. Liverpool has always been known for its cultural offerings and is one of Britain’s most multicultural cities so there are lots of different cuisines to try in the city centre, which is where I am based. I am going to have to start working my way through them all!
