When lawyers leave a role, it’s easy to assume salary is the main driver.
Salary still matters, but it’s no longer the only reason lawyers make a move. In this post, we explore what’s really driving legal professionals to look for new roles, and how you can use those insights to guide your own career decisions.
Yes – pay still tops the list when it comes to why lawyers choose to move. But our latest research reveals something deeper: lawyers are leaving for roles that improve their day-to-day lives, not just their pay packet.
The top motivators for moving in 2025 were:
- A better financial package
- A healthier work-life balance
- Greater flexibility or a better location
- More meaningful or enjoyable work
Interestingly, career progression was not a top reason for most leavers. This suggests lawyers are less focused on climbing the ladder and more focused on finding a role that allows them to thrive, personally and professionally.
How this impacts you and your career
If you’ve ever felt like a move would be “just for the money,” it might be time to reframe the question. What would actually make you feel more fulfilled at work? More supported? Less stressed? A pay rise may be part of the answer—but it’s rarely the whole one.
If you’ve been questioning whether your current role is still the right fit, let’s talk. Our team can help you understand your options and what’s motivating others in your practice area to move.
