Realm Talks to... John Osborne

Posted on 21/1/2022 by Michaela Baddeley

In this edition of Realm Talks To... Junior Consultant Michaela spoke to John Osborne, Partner and Head of Family at Harrison Drury. During their conversation, John gave us an insight into his greatest achievements, why life experience is an important factor when recruiting lawyers and his advice to someone starting out in the law.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in the law?

I would say try and arrange plenty of work experience at different firms before joining one. You may think you have a clear idea of what you want to do, but having some experience at a real firm can help form your future thoughts on what you might like to specialise in or the type of firm you want to be part of.

When it comes to recruiting, what do you look for in a lawyer?

I look not just at the qualifications but the amount of “life” experience a candidate has. I am always interested in the things people do outside of work as it really can point to their character and help us assess if they are a good fit at the firm. I also look for good grammar in a CV and covering email/letter.

Do you have any New Year's resolutions for 2022?

To get out playing live music again and write some new songs.

What would you say has been your greatest achievement?

In work: probably having a reported case in the law reports in respect of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 2008.

Out of work: being there for my children and supporting them to get to university and beyond. But I also guess that writing an album and several singles and getting them played on the radio/Spotify has been a proud moment too.

What’s your go-to work from home snack?

KitKat

What's your favourite book?

I’m not a big reader but very much enjoyed “My Bass and Other Animals” recently – Guy Pratt (bassist with Pink Floyd, Roxy Music and David Gilmour).

Do you prefer a night in or a night out?
It's a dead heat – a night in playing a guitar or night out playing a guitar is just as enjoyable!
