Our family law recruitment specialist Michaela recently caught up with Emma Palmer, Partner and Head of Family at MSB Solicitors.
Topics of conversation included Emma’s plans for her team at MSB, what she might have done professionally if she hadn’t become a family solicitor and her love for Canadian sitcom Schitt’s Creek.
If you hadn’t become a lawyer, what would have been your plan B?
If I hadn’t become a lawyer I am not quite sure what I would be. I love the idea of being a songwriter but realistically that would never have been an option! I applied for (and was offered) several graduate jobs before deciding to do my LPC and become a lawyer. It was several different jobs because I did not know what I wanted to do. I’m confident I would have ended up working with and for people, no matter what the role.
What do the next 12 months look like for you and your team?
For me, the next 12 months for the team are really about coming back together again and remembering our love of collaboration and passing on our wisdom to each other. I am aware of how lucky I am that I enjoy the company of all of my colleagues, each of them has such skill in what they do that we are all forever learning when we are around each other. It will be a year of stabilizing the team, renewing relationships and getting prepared then for the next few years where we continue to grow the team.
Is there anything career-wise that you would still like to achieve?
The moment that anybody stops wanting to achieve something is the moment they should retire in my opinion. I have been extremely lucky in my career to date and had many successes. I take none of that for granted yet I still believe that the best moments of my career are ahead of me. What those moments will be, I do not know. To watch the next generation flourish and be able to achieve is something that is important to me.
What TV show are you currently bingeing?
Schitt’s Creek has to be one of the best TV programmes that has ever come into existence. I binge-watched that recently and for the first time, I have started watching it again. I have never watched anything twice and this is the only show that has been good enough to do that. I was also surprised by The Queen’s Gambit and I binge-watched that recently. It reminded me that you should never judge a TV programme by the fact that it is about chess, it is a must-watch!
What is your go-to karaoke song?
As much as I love music I am very aware that I cannot hold a tune and so karaoke is not for me. However, we currently have the Descendants soundtrack on in our home constantly as it is a favourite of my two young children, so if I had to choose it would probably be something from that soundtrack or The Greatest Showman – A Million Dreams being the most likely.
