In the latest commercial insurance instalment of Realm Talks To, we spoke to Ruth Lawrence, Head of Professional Indemnity at Keoghs. In the interview, Ruth explains what’s in store for her team at Keoghs, how she spends her time away from the office and shares with us her favourite seafood spot.
Why did you decide to become a lawyer?
I always wanted to become a lawyer and always wanted to help people. As a newly qualified lawyer, I saw that as being as a family or criminal lawyer. I am afraid I soon found out that wasn’t for me but I still get a lot of satisfaction from helping my clients especially the professionals who understandably are very concerned when they face a claim and really appreciate having a lawyer who is clearly on their side.
What do the next 12 months look like for you and your team?
I think the next 12 months will be really exciting. I am looking forward to getting back into the office one or two days a week especially as we are moving into new offices with lots of trendy features. That will give us lots of opportunities for training both ourselves and clients together with some social drinks – I hope! We also have some very interesting and high-profile cases coming to trial or mediation which will keep us on our toes. All in all, I think it will be a very busy 12 months as the world (hopefully) continues to open up.
What’s the best thing about your job?
My clients and my colleagues as well as the interesting and stimulating nature of the work. No two cases are ever the same and the work is never boring.
What’s the biggest obstacle you’ve had to overcome in your career so far?
I think I have been very lucky in my career and cannot think of any major obstacles. I think one of the bravest things I ever did was ask if I could work part-time when I was a new mother with twins but at that time no one else in the firm worked part-time. Luckily, I had a very supportive boss who said yes! The arrangement worked well and lasted 10 years.
Who do you turn to for advice at work?
My colleagues in the team – there is always someone who knows the answer whether it is a difficult legal issue or where to go for dinner.
What advice would you give your teenage self?
Don’t worry too much about a life plan. Make sure you are working in a job you enjoy but still challenges you and the rest will take care of itself.
What do you like to do away from the office?
I am tempted to just say eat good food and drink wine but also lots of long walks with my cockapoo at home and sailing and skiing on holiday.
Where’s your favourite place to eat out?
My local pub which is within easy walking distance of our house. It is my “go-to” on a Friday night. Alternatively, Twnti seafood on the Llyn Peninsula is somewhere special.
What’s the last film you saw and what did you think of it?
I tend to watch box sets now rather than films and really enjoyed the second series of Succession. The antics in the boardroom are a far cry from events at Keoghs. Thank goodness!
Which three people would you invite to your dream dinner party?
Michelle Obama, Adele and Peter Kay.
