Court Of Protection Lawyer

Apply now
  • Small, growing Court of Protection team with no glass ceiling and plenty of room to progress
  • Work directly with the Head of Department on high-value deputyships involving brain-injured clients
  • Hybrid working with potentially 2–4 days from home, depending on your experience and support needs

If you’ve gained some Court of Protection experience and want to make it a bigger part of your career, this Manchester-based role gives you the work and senior support to do exactly that.

You’ll join a small team where you’ll work directly with the Head of Department, rather than becoming one of many lawyers in a large hierarchy. The caseload is already there, including high-value Property & Affairs deputyships and trusts for vulnerable children and adults who have suffered brain injuries.

The firm is particularly open to lawyers who already have Court of Protection experience, as well as private client solicitors with strong probate and trust management backgrounds who have touched CoP work and now want to specialise. As the team grows, there’s plenty of scope to increase your responsibility and progress without waiting for layers of people above you to move on.

You’ll be based in a modern city centre, with hybrid working once you’re established. The exact split can flex according to experience and supervision needs, making this a particularly interesting option for an experienced lawyer looking for greater autonomy.

Who we’re looking for

  • At least 2 years’ experience in Court of Protection, ideally Property & Affairs (Essential)
  • Understanding of the Mental Capacity Act, Code of Practice and Court of Protection Rules (Essential)
  • Strong private client experience (Essential)
  • Excellent attention to detail and creative problem-solving skills (Essential)
  • Strong commitment to client care (Essential)
  • Genuine interest in helping vulnerable clients and their families rebuild their lives following injury (Essential)
  • Probate and trust management experience for private client lawyers looking to specialise in CoP (Desirable)
  • Understanding of welfare benefits (Desirable)
  • STEP qualification or interest in working towards it (Desirable)
  • Ambition to develop a long-term career in Court of Protection (Desirable)

What you’ll be doing

  • Assisting the Deputy with a national caseload of high-value Property & Affairs deputyships and trust matters
  • Working with vulnerable adults and children following brain injuries
  • Managing your own smaller Court of Protection matters
  • Developing a private client caseload where appropriate
  • Working closely with the firm’s Clinical Negligence team
  • Visiting clients and their families outside the office
  • Building strong relationships with clients, families and other professionals
  • Supporting the continued development and marketing of the Court of Protection team

Salary & Benefits

  • Competitive salary
  • Bonus scheme
  • Hybrid working, potentially 2–4 days from home depending on experience and supervision requirements
  • Direct access to and development from the Head of Department
  • Clear progression within a small, growing team with no glass ceiling
  • High-quality work already available – no need to build a caseload from scratch
  • Ongoing professional development and training
  • Generous holiday allowance
  • Additional leave for long service
  • Holiday purchase scheme
  • Birthday off
  • Health cash plan
  • Pension scheme
  • Regular breakfast and lunch events
  • Long-service recognition
  • Modern Manchester city-centre office with lounge, barista service and dedicated wellness space
  • Flexible working options and a friendly, down-to-earth culture
